An age old game with a deadly twist; that is how I would describe the concept of this movie. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, watch it HERE. Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare hit theaters on Friday, the 13th of April. My friend and I figured why not see a scary movie on a ‘scary’ day of the year – scary to those who are superstitious that is. Keep reading to see what my TRUE thoughts are regarding the movie. NO SPOILERS!
As a fan of the Pretty Little Liars (PLL) television series, I was very excited to see Lucy Hale stare in a horror movie. The thing was, her character in the movie didn’t seem all that different in behavior then that on the PLL. Besides Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey from Teen Wolf, I was not familiar with any of the other actors in the movie. I thought overall, they did fine at acting like stupid college kids but there was no surprise performances in the movie. The movie did seemed to capture different personalities and backgrounds which was nice.
I went into the movie expecting it to be scary in the sense that I would be jumping out of my seat, however that was not the case. The movie was not really scary at all. Instead I would have categorized Truth or Dare as a mystery movie, not a thriller/ horror film like it was categorized as. Watching the movie I was reminded of something I had already watched before… the Final Destination movies. You know, a story of friends all doing something together – in this movie it was Going on spring break- then something happens and now you are just waiting for someone to die, it’s just a matter of when and where.
The movie was not only NOT scary but at some points it was predictable. Overall, the storyline and the movie itself was kind of flat and one tone in a sense, nothing really stood out or was THAT memorable…well that’s not 100% true. What stuck with me is this “tell the truth or you DIE, do the dare or you DIE, refuse to play and you DIE.” Well going forward I will be abiding by these rules if and I when I play truth or dare!
I am not sure if my lack of enjoyment for this movie comes from the fact that the other movie goes in the theater were annoying [cue the teenagers who were talking, checking there phones, AND answering calls through the movie] or that the movie was just not what I had expected or hoped for… it’s easy to say, my Friday the 13th movie experience was not what I had hoped for. I was VERY excited for a scary movie and Truth or Dare was not that.
Compared to some movies I have seen lately this one just did not do it for me, maybe that’s because most (if not all) of the big moments in the storyline of the movie were placed in the trailer. Don’t get me wrong, its not that I would tell people to not go see this movie, BUT I would recommend this movie more so people who aren’t a fan of scary movies. If your someone who wants a scary, makes you jump out of your seat movie this one is not for you, maybe see A Quiet Place – I hear it’s great and it’s on my list to see!
If anyone has already seen Truth or Dare, Leave a comment below! I’d love to hear what you thought. Also, enjoy this picture of my friend Monica and I from after the movie… this is my ‘I don’t know if I would choose Truth or Dare’ face.
